Critical list of Austrian Scientists
23 August 1949
SUBJECT: Critical List of Austrian Scientists
TO: The Director of Central Intelligence
Attention: , Asst. Director, OSI
-
Reference is made to JIOA letter 1034 of 16 March 1949, subject “Request for Nominations of Austrian Scientists to Critical List.”
-
This Agency has received a letter from Headquarters, USFA, inclosing their recommendations for the Austrian Critical List. USFA has also listed specialists of lesser importance which might be included in a denial program for Austria.
-
This Agency is calling a meeting of representatives of the three services to discuss the nominations to the Critical List in particular, and to consider the advisability of a general denial program for Austria similar to that now in effect in Germany. The caliber of specialists in Austria is, of course, an important consideration in evaluating the need for and necessary scope of a denial program for that country.
-
The meeting referred to will be held in the Offices of JIOA, room 2D937, Pentagon, on Wednesday, 14 September. It would be apprecieted if a representative of CIA could be present at the meeting to give us the views of your Agency on the preeminence of the specialists on the inclosed lists. If you will advise us of the name of your representative, a time for the meeting will be arranged that will be convenient for all concerned.
-
Your nominations for the Austrian Critical List forwarded by your letter of 13 April 1949 have been received and together with those of the services are being sent to USFA for comment.
